“I can bring my work up here,” Elsie offered again. “I don’t like to leave you alone when you’re not well.”

‘If you want to Elsie, that would be nice, but I’m a big boy; if you want to go downstairs and finish up your day, you certainly may.’

Charles adjusted the two bags in his hands, and followed Elsie off the plane. It was warm in the terminal, and he was glad that he had worn lighter clothing. ‘Let’s get our bags and get out of here.’

He stopped on his way out to kiss her on the head. ‘I was going to make dinner for us, but I can’t see that we’ll be hungry. I still feel a bit Ill.’

“Do you want me to stay?” Elsie offered. “Take care of you until you feel better?”

‘No….I did this to myself, and you have work to do, you said. I’ll just have a shower, and hope that’ll help me feel better.’

“You just want me walking in front of you. I know you, my darling husband.”

‘That doesn’t hurt either, you know. Your bottom is awe-inspiring. Now get going.’

‘Elsie? Do you never have doubts about my faithfulness? Or my desire for other women?’

“Of course I have doubts. But then I remember you promised. I trust your promises. You might look at other women, even desire them — you are human, after all — but you’ll not do anything about it. I don’t have any doubts on that score.”

‘Good.’ Charles gave Elsie a quick kiss on her lips, then rose to get their carry-on bags from the overhead compartment. ‘Ladies first; that way you can start out giving me the tour.’

‘Then don’t trust me.’ The plane had landed and people were disembarking. ‘Do you want to get off now, or wait for the masses to leave first?’

“Let’s get off and get this honeymoon started. Maybe then you’ll believe I’m telling the truth when I say that I love you and I trust you and that I want only you. Good lord, I’ve never known a man who fought happiness quite as hard as you do.”

‘Elsie? Do you never have doubts about my faithfulness? Or my desire for other women?’

‘Very well then. Thank you for the lovely company, enjoy your meal, and I’m going to take a shower.’

“I’ll see you when I finish work,” Elsie said, her attention already on her plate.

He stopped on his way out to kiss her on the head. ‘I was going to make dinner for us, but I can’t see that we’ll be hungry. I still feel a bit Ill.’

‘I just said I’m good with pretending, because I don’t want you nagging me for the rest of the night.’

“Then why don’t we start now. Let’s pretend I came up to share a nice lunch with you, and maybe you’ll let me eat in peace.”

‘Very well then. Thank you for the lovely company, enjoy your meal, and I’m going to take a shower.’

“You expect me to trust you, just like that,” Elsie snapped her fingers, “even though 20 years of experience and your own fears say otherwise.”

“You don’t want me to say the truth and you don’t want me to pretend it’s not the truth. So what is it you do want?”

‘I just said I’m good with pretending, because I don’t want you nagging me for the rest of the night.’

‘No, what I said - after you made comments about your George - was that I don’t do threesomes. You asked about my fantasy about you and Ashleigh, which I never had, actually, and it went from there. And *you* know it.

You know about my cheating issue, Elsie. Why do…

“Would you rather I continued nagging?”
